Liberty Roads

Publisher: Hexasim  ·  Creator: Yves Le Quellec & Nicolas Rident

Anecdote

A French design by Nicolas Rident published by Hexasim, Liberty Roads recreates the Western European campaign from June 1944 to May 1945, from the landings to the German surrender. The hex-and-counter system uses divisions on a map covering France, the Benelux, and western Germany. A full game requires approximately twenty to thirty hours, but shorter scenarios allow players to tackle Normandy, Market Garden, or the Ardennes in eight to ten hours. The learning curve is moderate, thanks to a very clear instructional booklet in French. Rident drew on works by Henri Amouroux, Olivier Wieviorka, and German sources to build a remarkably faithful simulation. Hexasim's components are of very high quality, with a beautifully drafted map and readable player aids. Liberty Roads has established itself as one of the leading French references in modern operational wargaming, demonstrating that France can produce titles of international calibre. Critical reception was excellent, earning several nominations for wargame of the year. The title's influence is reflected in the vitality of the Hexasim tradition, which has since published several major operational titles. The French-speaking community is very active, producing fan-made scenarios and linked campaigns. The historical booklet in French is well written and provides a genuine introduction to the campaign. The title has seen several reprints, testament to its lasting success. For French-speaking enthusiasts of the European campaign, Liberty Roads remains a major reference. Hexasim confirms with this game its status as France's foremost publisher of auteur wargames. The title embodies the maturity of a French tradition capable of competing with GMT and MMP on their own ground.
