Anecdote
Developed by the Hungarian studio Gaijin Entertainment and released in December 2013 after two years of early access, War Thunder aims to deliver the most comprehensive combined-arms combat simulator ever designed. The player can equally pilot Yak-3 fighters, B-29 bombers, Panther tanks, Scharnhorst battlecruisers, or modern helicopters, in battles of up to thirty-two players. Director Anton Yudintsev structured the experience around three modes — arcade, realistic, and simulation — enabling both newcomers and seasoned virtual pilots to find their footing. The catalog features more than two thousand historical vehicles spread across eleven nations including France, Italy, and Germany, and continues to be expanded with major quarterly updates. The modeling of cockpits, engines, and ballistics rests on prodigious documentation: Gaijin employs a full-time team of historians and has even contributed to the disclosure of classified documents through the community's legendary leaks concerning the Challenger 2 and Leclerc tanks. The maps faithfully reproduce the deserts of Tunisia, Norwegian fjords, the plains of Kursk, and Pacific atolls with photographic care. A standard battle lasts between ten and thirty minutes, while historical campaign modes offer scripted engagements inspired by real operations. The game is free to play, supported by technology trees and an open premium system. It has won several awards for technical excellence, unites more than seventy million players, and underpins a unique competitive aerial simulation scene. War Thunder today embodies the quintessence of the accessible multidisciplinary historical simulator.
