Anecdote

Designed by the German studio The Lordz Games Studio under the direction of Diego Vargas and published by Slitherine in July 2011, Panzer Corps proudly claims the legacy of SSI's legendary Panzer General while modernising it. The player takes command of a Wehrmacht — or Axis, depending on the expansion — commander and progresses through a dynamic campaign covering the Spanish Civil War, the invasion of Poland, France, the Balkans, North Africa, the Eastern Front, and the defence of the Reich. The unit experience system, faithfully resurrected from Panzer General, allows tanks, infantry, and squadrons that have distinguished themselves to be carried over from one mission to the next, transforming over the course of battles into elites known as "overstrength units." Each scenario offers a primary objective and a secondary objective which, if achieved within the time limit, opens an alternative campaign branch. The catalogue covers more than one thousand historical units modelled in three dimensions on hexagonal maps, with pedagogically varied terrain — plains, forests, swamps, deserts, mountains — that modifies combat characteristics. A standard mission lasts between thirty minutes and two hours. The title is complemented by the expansions Allied Corps, Afrika Korps, Soviet Corps, U.S. Corps, Sea Lion, and Grand Campaign across several volumes. Composer Frédéric Cougoul contributed a sweeping and martial orchestral score. Panzer Corps brought together a structured competitive community through Slitherine and continues to be developed via Panzer Corps 2, launched in 2020. It represents the contemporary embodiment of the Panzer General spirit and remains an ideal entry point for newcomers to hex-based wargaming.
