Pavlov's House
Anecdote
A dense solo design by Dan Verssen for Dan Verssen Games, Pavlov's House reconstructs the legendary defence of a Stalingrad apartment building by Sergeant Yakov Pavlov and his small garrison between September and November 1942. The player manages three interlocking scales: the building itself, the 13th Guards Regiment across the Volga, and the Soviet operational command. The system combines action cards, dice rolls, and time management, with a modular board representing the building and its approaches. A session lasts approximately ninety minutes and delivers an oppressive attrition experience, faithful to the urban hell of Stalingrad. The learning curve is moderate, with a very clear rulebook on the tactical situation. Dan Verssen drew on the works of Antony Beevor and Jochen Hellbeck to build a simulation faithful to Soviet accounts. The components are understated but effective, with event cards and an immediately readable board. The title found a strong following in the solo gaming community and received several distinctions in that category. Pavlov's House is part of an urban trilogy alongside Castle Itter and Soldiers in Postmen's Uniforms, forming a genuine corpus of memorial gaming. Dan Verssen Games established itself as a leading solo wargame publisher with this title. The game's influence can be seen in the new wave of solo urban wargames blending micro-tactics with grand strategy. A French translation does not exist, but the material remains very accessible to French-speaking players. For Stalingrad enthusiasts, it is an irreplaceable experience that places the player in the frozen boots of the defenders of a building that became a monument. Pavlov's House illustrates the capacity of the board game to tell a battle at the level of the individual soldier and the high command simultaneously. It is also one of the finest solo wargames of the decade.
