Triumph & Tragedy: European Balance of Power 1936-1945

Publisher: GMT Games  ·  Creator: Craig Besinque

Anecdote

An original creation by Craig Besinque for GMT Games, Triumph & Tragedy offers an unprecedented geopolitical vision of the Second World War, simultaneously handling conventional warfare, economic warfare, and the race for special weapons. Three players take the roles of the Axis, the West, and the USSR, navigating diplomacy, espionage, industrial research, and military campaigns. The system combines a board, production cards, and a resolution mechanic using wooden blocks in the tradition of Columbia Games classic wargames. A game lasts approximately four to five hours and presents a truly geopolitical view of the conflict, in which an economic or nuclear victory is just as achievable as a military one. The learning curve is moderate thanks to a very clear instructional booklet. Besinque wanted to offer a simulation in which war is merely one option among many, faithful to the complexity of the years 1936–1945. The production is understated but carefully crafted, with silk-screened wooden blocks and a strategically charted map of Europe. Triumph & Tragedy was hailed as a complete reinvention of the three-player WWII wargame, breaking from the usual Axis-versus-Allies face-off. Its critical reception was excellent, earning several major awards including a Charles S. Roberts. The title's influence can be seen in the new generation of wargames incorporating economics and diplomacy, such as Imperial or Hitler's Reich. A revised edition was subsequently published, a testament to the system's longevity. The community is very active, populating Vassal and BGG with variants and scenarios. A French localization is more marginal, but the material remains accessible to seasoned French speakers. For grand strategy enthusiasts, Triumph & Tragedy remains one of the decade's high points. It is a title that reminds us that war is also a matter of production, alliance, and the bomb.
