Diplomacy
Anecdote
A legendary creation by Allan B. Calhamer published by Avalon Hill, Diplomacy remains, after six decades, one of the most radical strategy games ever designed. Seven players embody the great European powers in 1901 — England, France, Germany, Italy, Austria-Hungary, Russia, Turkey — and attempt to dominate the continent through diplomacy, alliances, and betrayal. The system is entirely deterministic: no dice, no cards, only written orders resolved simultaneously according to rules of mathematical elegance. A game lasts approximately six to eight hours and delivers a social experience of rare psychological intensity in the hobby. The learning curve is surprisingly gentle for the rules, but mastery demands years of practice. Calhamer wanted to recreate pre-war European diplomacy through a pure negotiation mechanic, free from randomness. The original production is understated but of typical Avalon Hill quality, with a silk-screened map and wooden pieces. Diplomacy fascinated Henry Kissinger, John F. Kennedy, and numerous political figures who played it assiduously. The title stands as a direct precursor to WWII modeling in that it anticipates games with a diplomatic component such as Triumph & Tragedy or Churchill. Its distribution was enormous, with several editions, world tournaments, and a legendary play-by-mail scene that predated the internet. The title's influence is incalculable: virtually all wargames with a diplomatic component are descended from it. The community remains active with play-by-email and online tournaments, and the title has seen numerous French translations. The material remains sought after by collectors, and Hasbro reprints continue to appear. For many, Diplomacy is the defining test of the grand strategist, a game that reveals human nature through promise and betrayal. It is also a unique educational tool for understanding the diplomatic mechanisms that led to 1914 and 1939.
