Twilight Struggle

Publisher: GMT Games  ·  Creator: Ananda Gupta & Jason Matthews

Anecdote

A monumental creation by Ananda Gupta and Jason Matthews for GMT Games, Twilight Struggle covers the entire Cold War, from 1945 to 1989, within a card-driven system of rare elegance. Two players take the roles of the USSR and the United States and attempt to impose their influence on the nations of the globe through a historical event card mechanic. Although it does not cover the Second World War in the strict sense, the title is its immediate continuation and features in any panorama of games set in the mid-twentieth century. A game lasts approximately three hours and delivers a tense experience in which every card is a dilemma. The learning curve is moderate thanks to an exemplary instructional booklet. Gupta and Matthews wanted to recreate the Cold War through an asymmetric card mechanic inspired by Mark Herman's We the People. GMT's production is understated but of solid quality, with a strategically charted world map. Twilight Struggle sat at the top of the BGG rankings for several years, reaching the worldwide number-one position between 2010 and 2016. The title was hailed as one of the greatest wargames ever produced and features in every hall of fame in the hobby. Its influence is immense: modern card-driven design descends directly from this title, which inspired an entire generation of designers such as Volko Ruhnke. A French localization by Filosofia went through several reprints and a Deluxe edition with a mounted board. The community is one of the most active in wargaming, feeding Steam, Vassal, and world tournaments. A digital adaptation on Steam has enjoyed lasting success. For enthusiasts of twentieth-century history, Twilight Struggle is a gold standard. The title demonstrates the card-driven format's ability to tell forty-five years of history in three hours, and remains one of GMT Games's editorial high points.
