Empire of the Sun

Publisher: GMT Games  ·  Creator: Mark Herman

Anecdote

A magisterial work by Mark Herman for GMT Games, Empire of the Sun is considered one of the greatest strategic wargames ever published, covering the entire Pacific War from 1941 to 1945 within a single card-driven system. The player takes the role of either Imperial Japan or the Allies, simultaneously managing land offensives, naval-air operations, and logistics across the vast Pacific theater. The system combines historical event cards, strategic points, and battles resolved through the activation of operational groups. A full game requires ten to fifteen hours, though shorter scenarios allow specific phases to be tackled in four to five hours. The learning curve is demanding and richly rewards the investment made. Herman, a card-driven wargame veteran since For the People and Washington's War, delivers his absolute masterpiece here, built on thorough historical research. The map stretches from Japan to Australia by way of Pearl Harbor, and the simulation of logistical challenges is particularly nuanced. GMT's production values are very high, with superbly illustrated event cards. Empire of the Sun has gone through several successive editions, including a fourth in 2015 with revised rules and a redesigned board. Its influence on strategic card-driven wargaming is immense, and several contemporary designers such as Volko Ruhnke have explicitly acknowledged it. The community is one of the most active in modern wargaming, feeding Vassal, BGG, and specialist publications. The title has received several major awards, including a Charles S. Roberts and an International Gamers Award. No French translation exists, but the material remains accessible to seasoned French speakers. For Pacific War enthusiasts, it is simply the gold standard. Empire of the Sun is one of those wargames that defines its subject for an entire generation of players.
