Undaunted: North Africa
Anecdote
A direct standalone sequel to the first instalment, Undaunted: North Africa transports the Thompson-Benjamin system to the desert theatre of 1941–1942, pitting the British Long Range Desert Group against Italian units of the Royal Corps of Colonial Troops. The designers introduce two major innovations: fully realised vehicles with transport and raiding mechanics, and alternative victory conditions tied to sabotage and reconnaissance. The deck-building engine remains the same but adapts to the more mobile, fragmented tempo of the desert war. Each scenario plays out in around one hour, and the twelve-mission campaign tells the war from the ground up, at patrol level. The learning curve benefits from familiarity with Normandy while offering enough new content to engage players already acquainted with the system. Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson claim an almost cinematic approach, inspired by the accounts of David Lloyd Owen and the chronicles of the LRDG. Roland MacDonald's illustrations develop an ochre-and-sand palette that contrasts sharply with the greens of Normandy. Historical fidelity is served by a campaign booklet full of veterans' anecdotes and reconstructed staff maps. The title reinforced the idea that Undaunted was a genuine modular system and not merely a flash in the pan. Critical reception was equally enthusiastic, with a Charles S. Roberts mention and excellent rankings on BoardGameGeek. The French translation by Pixie Games enabled real penetration into the French-speaking market, including salons and wargaming clubs. North Africa also convinced the sceptics that deck-building could carry multiple theatres without losing its tactical flavour. The components gain variety with large-format vehicle cards and careful typographic work. For many players, it is the most fluid instalment of the series — the one that best marries mechanics and theme.
