Tobruk: Tank Battles in North Africa 1942

Publisher: Avalon Hill  ·  Creator: Harold Hock (dev. Randall Reed)

Anecdote

A legendary creation by Frank Davis for Avalon Hill, Tobruk reconstructs the armoured battles of Tobruk and Gazala in 1942 with a degree of tactical simulation of unprecedented refinement for its time. The individual-vehicle-scale hex-and-counter system integrates ballistics, differentiated armour, and the individual characteristics of each tank model. Two players command the British Eighth Army and Rommel's Afrika Korps on maps representing the desert landscapes of Libya. A game lasts roughly three to five hours and offers approximately twenty scenarios. The learning curve is demanding, as the title is renowned for the depth of its rules. Davis drew on combat reports and technical manuals to build a simulation of impressive fidelity. The original components are understated but of solid quality for the period, with substantial scenario booklets and reference tables. Tobruk achieved considerable success, making it one of the most widely played wargames of the 1970s. The title's influence is incalculable: it invented the granular armoured tactical wargame and inspired an entire generation of designers, particularly in the modelling of individual tank characteristics. The title notably influenced Squad Leader and the entire ASL school. The community remained loyal to the title for several decades, filling the internet with campaign accounts and variants. A French translation does not exist, though the material remains sought after by collectors. For armour enthusiasts and wargaming historians, Tobruk is an absolute classic. It embodies the maturity of an American school of tactical wargaming in the 1970s. It continues to serve today as a reference for anyone seeking to understand the origins of the modern armoured tactical wargame. With this title, Avalon Hill confirmed its expertise in the granular simulation of armoured combat.
