Anecdote
Designed by David Thompson and Trevor Benjamin, illustrated by Roland MacDonald and published by Osprey Games, Undaunted: Normandy brilliantly applies the deck-building mechanic to small-scale WWII tactical combat. At the section level, each card represents an individual soldier, and a man's death literally removes a card from your deck — a striking metaphor for the moral and material attrition of units. A full game takes around forty-five minutes for two players, making it a formidably elegant and replayable title. The learning curve is surprisingly gentle for such a nuanced game, thanks to a twelve-scenario campaign that progressively introduces vehicles, mortars, and machine guns. The designer sought to strip the wargame of its combat tables while preserving a genuine sense of command, and the results speak for themselves: tension builds with every draw. The flat-colour illustrations represent a radical departure from the usual aesthetic of the genre and have helped attract a new audience from the modern board-game scene. Historical sources draw on accounts from the US 4th Infantry Division and the Wehrmacht's 916th Regiment, giving the scenarios solid documentary grounding. The range expanded rapidly with North Africa, Stalingrad, and Reinforcements, forming a true modular system. Its influence has been considerable: Undaunted reconciled modern gamers with the WWII theme and inspired a wave of tactical games in compact format. Critical success was immediate, with nominations at all the major international awards and very high rankings on BoardGameGeek. A French localisation by Pixie Games brought the title beyond the initial circle of English-speaking hobbyists. Fast setup and a compact box make it an ideal companion for evenings with friends or convention play. Undaunted now embodies a new way of telling the story of war through games, where every lost card weighs as heavily as a hex removed from a staff map.
