The Caucasus Campaign 1942
Anecdote
Designed by Vance von Borries for GMT Games, The Caucasus Campaign recreates the Caucasus campaign from July 1942 to February 1943, from the launch of Fall Edelweiss to the German retreat. The divisional-scale hex-and-counter system uses a map covering the Caucasus, the Don, and the lower Volga. A full game requires approximately twelve to eighteen hours, but shorter scenarios allow players to tackle the key phases in five to eight hours. The learning curve is moderate, thanks to a very clear instructional booklet. Von Borries, a veteran wargame designer on the Eastern Front, drew on David Glantz, Wilhelm Tieke, and German sources to build an impressively faithful simulation. GMT's components are of very high quality, with a beautifully drafted map and readable player aids. The Caucasus Campaign stands in the tradition of GMT's great Eastern Front titles alongside Barbarossa: Army Group South. Critical reception was excellent, earning several nominations for wargame of the year. The title's influence is visible in the modelling of secondary theatres that are often overlooked but here receive the place they deserve in the ludic historiography. The community is active, supplying Vassal and BGG with variants and scenarios. No French translation exists, but the material remains accessible to experienced French-speaking players. For enthusiasts of the southern Eastern Front, this is one of the finest treatments ever produced. Von Borries confirms with this title his standing as a recognised specialist of the Eastern Front. The title embodies the richness of the GMT tradition for those wishing to explore the lesser-known phases of the conflict. It offers a privileged window onto a campaign whose oil-related stakes were decisive.
