The Hunters: German U-Boats at War, 1939-43

Publisher: Consim Press / GMT Games  ·  Creator: Gregory M. Smith

Anecdote

A solo creation by Gregory M. Smith for Consim Press and GMT Games, The Hunters places the player in the role of a German U-Boot commander operating in the Atlantic from 1939 to 1943. The system combines mission management, dice rolls, and career progression in an entirely solitaire narrative experience. Each patrol lasts approximately one to two hours, and replayability is sustained by a full career spanning several years. The learning curve is moderate thanks to a very clear instructional booklet. Smith drew on the memoirs of Werner, Topp, Hardegen, and the works of Clay Blair to build an impressively faithful simulation. GMT's production is understated but solidly crafted, with event cards and a readable mission booklet. The Hunters was praised as one of the best solo wargames of the decade. Its critical reception was excellent, earning several major awards in the solo category. The title's influence can be seen in the recent wave of narrative solo wargames such as Pavlov's House and Castle Itter. The system spawned a sequel, The Hunted: Twilight of the U-Boats, covering 1943–1945. The community is very active, feeding BGG with campaign narratives and house rules. No French translation exists, but the material remains accessible to experienced French speakers. For enthusiasts of submarine warfare and solo play, The Hunters is a landmark. The title embodies the new wave of solo wargames that reconcile simulation and narrative. Smith confirms with this system his status as a leading solo designer. It is also a game that invites reading the great U-Boot accounts, serving as a ludic extension of a historical library.
