Anecdote

Created by Thibaud de la Touanne for Triton Noir, V-Commandos — retitled V-Sabotage — is a cooperative game inspired by the special operations of the British Special Operations Executive and the American Office of Strategic Services. One to four players take on the roles of a commando team tasked with infiltrating a Nazi complex, sabotaging strategic installations, and extracting before reinforcements arrive. The system combines a modular tile board, visibility and noise management, and action cards specific to each specialist character. A mission lasts around one hour, and replayability is sustained by some ten scenarios and several thematic expansions. The learning curve is quick, thanks to a well-constructed rulebook and an intuitive graduated alarm system. The designer researched with historians specialising in the SOE and consulted archives from Operation Anthropoid and the Saint-Nazaire raid. The components impress with their detailed miniatures and eye-level tile board, magnifying the atmosphere of a night raid. The Kickstarter campaign for the new V-Sabotage edition was one of the most closely followed in French wargaming, far exceeding its goals. Triton Noir has become, through this title, a reference point for thematic games with historical content. The game's influence can be seen in the recent wave of infiltration and raid games, often inspired by series such as Band of Brothers or The Inglorious Bastards. A native French edition and a polished English version have given the title international reach. Several expansions explore other theatres, from D-Day to underground combat in Norway. Community forums abound with mission accounts and house rules. For many players, it is the best entry point into cooperative WWII gaming, with a perfect balance of simulation and narrative tension.
