Storm Above the Reich
Anecdote
A solo design by Mark Aasted for GMT Games, Storm Above the Reich puts the player in the role of a Luftwaffe pilot defending the Reich against American bombers in 1943–1944. The system combines mission management, dice rolls, and career progression in a narrative experience of remarkable intensity. A mission lasts approximately two to three hours, and replayability is sustained by a full campaign covering the defence of the Reich. The learning curve is moderate, thanks to a very clear instructional booklet. Aasted drew on the memoirs of Galland, Steinhoff, Knoke, and the works of Donald Caldwell to build a faithful simulation of daily life in the Jagdwaffe. GMT's components are understated but solidly produced, featuring a fighter board and readable event cards. Storm Above the Reich follows in the tradition of great aerial solo wargames such as B-17. Critical reception was excellent, earning several nominations for solo wargame of the year. The title's influence is visible in the new wave of aerial solo wargames that honour Glenn Rahman's legacy. The community is very active, populating BGG with campaign narratives and house rules. A companion title, Skies Above the Reich, completes the formula by offering the other side of the confrontation. No French translation exists, but the material remains accessible to experienced French-speaking players. For aviation and solo gaming enthusiasts, this is a modern landmark. The title embodies the new wave of solo wargames that reconcile simulation with narrative. Aasted confirms with this system his status as a solo designer to watch. It is also a game that invites reading the great Luftwaffe memoirs, serving as the ludic extension of a historical library.
